12th Biennale dell’immagine Chiasso, CH

FAKE. visual distortion | Chiasso, September 17 – November 14

Centro Culturale Chiasso, CH

For its twelfth edition, the Biennale has chosen to tackle the theme of FAKE/visual distortion. It is a timely subject with crucial ethical and political implications, in an era where the tools of manipulation in this field have reached such effectiveness that they call into question humanity's relationship with surrounding reality. Technological evolution is relentless and, at the same time, fascinating. Manipulation, distortion, forgery… how many actions can be taken to transform an image, and in what ways? How and why alter its meaning and message? What is the starting point? And the destination?

By examining this pervasive phenomenon, the twelfth edition of the Biennale invites the public on a deep immersion into the illusions of the contemporary image. And it does so, as always, by bringing to Chiasso photographers and artists — Swiss and international, well-known and lesser-known — whose work guides us along unexpected, stimulating, and surprising paths.

Exhibition / Magic Lantern: Archeology of Projection Media

1 Apr - 2 Aug 2015

Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum, Tokyo, JP

The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum is currently hosting the “Magic Lantern: Archeology of Projection Media” exhibition. A magic lantern is an over 300 year old device that enlarges and projects paintings and photographs inscribed onto glass slides. Candles and lamps were originally used for light in magic lanterns but gas and electric light later became popular light sources. With its slide-changing mechanics, the magic lantern is said to be the predecessor to today’s slide projectors and power point presentations.

This exhibition consists of three sections: the history of the magic lantern, the spread of projection images, and the return to projection media. Interactive exhibitions are on display, allowing visitors to experience the allure of the magic lantern first-hand.
